A Photographic Mentor: Stephen Shore

About Stephen Shore

The photographic artist that I decided to base my project upon and emulate is Stephen Shore. In my opinion, he has many interesting and unique photos that I enjoy and appreciate and are some of the most intriguing photos around today . Stephen Shore was born on October 8, 1947 and is an American photographer who is known for his "deadpan" images of banal scenes and other objects in the United States. He is also known for his early use of color and focus in art photography. Stephen Shore was interested in photography from an early age. Self-taught, he received a darkroom kit at age 6 from his uncle. At age ten he received a copy of Walker Evans's book, "American Photographs", which had influenced him greatly. His career began also began at the early age of 14", when he made the move of presenting his photographs to Edward Steichen. Edward Steichen was then curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art . Recognizing Shore's talent, Steichen bought three of his works. At age 17, Shore met Andy Warhol and began to frequent Warhol's studio "the Factory", photographing Warhol and the creative people that surrounded him. In 1971, at the age of 24, Shore became the second living photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  this photo below is a photo hat stephen shore took and the main things that i think that stand out in this photo is the position in which he took the photo which is the same in almost all of his photos off to the side i also like how he incorporates the shadows in the photo and almost uses the tree to guide the viewer towards the buildings which i find are one of the main things that he takes photos of.
this photo i took trying to emulate stephen shores style of photography is a photo i took of the school in the forest i couldnt use shadows to direct the viewers attention but i did use the trees to direct the viewers attention like stephen shore did in the photo above.

this photo below is another photo taken by stephen shore its a photo of a cluster of buildings most likely in new york. The main reason i chose this photo is because i think it represents stephen shores style of the position in which the photo was taken and the shadows that he uses in every photo to almost direct the viewers attention to the most interesting part of the photo.

this photo i took is of a church behind our school i got the idea for this photo from the photo that stephen shore took above i couldnt use shadows to direct the viewers i tried to use the trees in the photo to direct the viewers attention instead.
this last photo by stephen shore is my personal favourite and i think one of his photos that best represents his style he takes this photo and like every other takes it on an angle he also uses shadows like in every other photo to direct the viewers attention to the other building and to the very sceneic background. so overall these photos i think are the most impressive in his work and are some of the most unique interesting and intriguing photos around today.
